The FPMT
is an organization devoted to preserving and spreading Mahayana Buddhism worldwide by creating opportunities to listen, reflect, meditate, practice and actualize the unmistaken teachings of the Buddha and based on that experience spreading the Dharma to sentient beings.

We provide integrated education through which people’s minds and hearts can be transformed into their highest potential for the benefit of others, inspired by an attitude of universal responsibility and service. We are committed to creating harmonious environments and helping all beings develop their full potential of infinite wisdom and compassion.

Our organization is based on the Buddhist tradition of Lama Tsongkhapa of Tibet as taught to us by our founders Lama Thubten Yeshe and Lama Zopa Rinpoche.

They began giving teachings to Westerners at Kopan Monastery on the outskirts of Kathmandu in 1965. Gradually their students, wanting to continue their studies at home, invited the Lamas on teaching tours of the West.

Together the two Lamas inspired and guided a growing network of meditation and retreat centres and monastic communities around the world. Since its beginnings in 1971 the FPMT has grown to more than 119 FPMT centers, projects and services and 38 study groups in 37 countries.

Lama Yeshe passed away in March 1984 and Tenzin Osel Rinpoche (born 1985 in Spain) was recognised as his incarnation by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Lama Zopa Rinpoche is the spiritual director of the FPMT.
